Compu-Med Vocational Careers gives nursing students cited answers, and faculty a view into where students need support

The challenge

Students had no single, trusted place to turn.

Nursing students make fast, high-stakes decisions while they are still building confidence. When unsure, many reached for Google, textbooks, policy manuals, or ChatGPT, and sorted through sources of uneven quality under time pressure. In a preliminary survey of 121 respondents, mostly nursing students, 43.8% said a general internet search was their first stop when uncertain, and 77.7% reported delays verifying high-alert medications at least sometimes.*

Faculty couldn't see where students were struggling.

Between classes, instructors had little visibility into which skills and topics students found confusing, so reinforcement was often a guess.

The solution

Cited answers grounded in the school's own materials.

CMVC loaded six institutional documents into AskRN, and all six were processed successfully. Students could ask a question and get an answer with citations, tied to the resources they are expected to use and backed by broader evidence-based nursing content.

Built into the curriculum, not bolted on.

AskRN was used as a supplement alongside classroom instruction, skills labs, simulation, and clinical preparation. It supports faculty teaching and does not replace it.

The results

Real adoption.

During the pilot, students submitted 1,137 queries.

Reliable, transparent answers.

AskRN answered 92.4% with high-confidence citations, close to its 95% target. The 7.6% unanswered rate shows exactly where to add content.

Used for hands-on skills, not just theory.

The most common topics were blood glucose monitoring (52.9% of queries), uploaded course documents (12.3%), general nursing questions (7.5%), Fundamentals of Nursing (4.4%), and the blood transfusion checklist (4.1%).

Students saw the value.

In a preliminary CMVC student survey (n=5), all respondents agreed the app reduced the time they spent searching for clinical information, and 80% strongly agreed the resources were clinically relevant and evidence-based.*

* Preliminary results from a small sample. They show perceived value, not outcomes.

“AskRN provides more than a searchable clinical resource. It creates an opportunity to better understand how students seek information, where they experience uncertainty, and what types of support they need as they progress from theoretical learning toward independent clinical judgment.”

What's next

01

Close the gap to 95%.

Review unanswered queries and add the missing policies, checklists, and course resources.

02

Support every learner.

Many CMVC students are English language learners, and some entries were short phrases rather than full questions. Guided prompts and multilingual support are a clear opportunity.

03

Keep measuring.

Ongoing surveys will track confidence, efficiency, and usage over time.
